Hideaki Anno is a Japanese film director, animator, and actor. He is best known for the psychological hit series Neon Genesis Evangelion. His style of work deals with postmodernism as well as character's thoughts and emotions through unconventional means. In Cutie Honey, he is known for directing and screenwriting the live-action film as well as supervising Re: Cutie Honey.

Career[]

Anno started as an animator for The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and later answered an ad for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind where his animation of the God Warrior (which later became a model for the Evas in Evangelion) impressed Hayao Miyazaki who later asked him for some of the more complicated scenes of the film. With the film's success Anno later co-founded Gainax where he directed Gunbuster and Nadia: The Secret of the Blue Water. After a four year hiatus, he later started Neon Genesis Evangelion which became Gainax's greatest success in spite of some controversial content shown on a children's network. After Evangelion, Anno would direct several later series including Cutie Honey that was a light-hearted departure from his more dark works.
